DescriptionEmbark on a creative journey by diving hands-on into the realm of fantasy cartography. Design intricate and imaginative maps that bring fictional worlds to life. Blend various media—such as watercolors, inks, colored pencil, and collage—to craft unique and visually captivating maps. Any media is welcome. No prior map making skills required.
Required materials:
PICK WHATEVER MATERIALS YOU FEEL MOST COMFORTABLE WITH! At a bare minimum please bring: rice, pen, graphite pencil, eraser, ruler, and paper
You will need:
- Roughly ¼ cup of DRY UNCOOKED rice: any type of rice
- Paper: any Hot Press watercolor paper will work well for either colored pencil or watercolor (Arches, Stonehenge, or Saunders)
- Pencils – H/HB and 2B
- Pens – a thin pen (0.3) AND thicker pen (.8 or 1) but feel free to bring more sizes/colors for variety in your maps (Micron, Copic or waterproof quill and ink)
- Erasers: regular eraser (optional: Tom bow / Mono Zero click erasers)
- Ruler
- Pickett Circle Template (optional) – to help you draw circles for a compass rose
- Tracing Paper (optional) - Canson Vidalon Vellum
Additional Optional Material Suggestions:
- Colored pencils (Faber Castell Polychromos, Caran d’Arche, Colorless Blenders either pencil or maker – Copic, Prismacolor, Faber Castell)
- Watercolor (Sennelier, Holbein, Windsor & Newton, Daniel Smith, Michael Wilcox)
- Brushes
Instructor: Stephanie OliverStephanie Oliver is a botanical illustrator as well as Certified Zentangle Instructor. She graduated from the Society of Botanical Artists, UK and School of Botanical Art & Illustration from the Denver Botanic Gardens. Stephanie teaches classes professionally both in person and online at the Denver Botanic Gardens and for private groups.
